And that is the deteriorating effects of worry. We all knowhow easy it is to get caught up into life’s ups and downs. With so many obligations, meetings, deadlines and appointments sometimes it seems impossible to find the time to relax, process our days, and the events that have occurred.

Unfortunately the stress of a fast paced lifestyle leads to worry, and worry can lead a host of physical ailments: heart attacks, high blood pressure, ulcers, gastrointestinal problems, muscular aches and pains, skin rashes, eczema, respiratory problems and asthma. Close to one in four people, at some point in their lives, meet criteria for diagnosable anxiety disorders related to worry which require professional treatment.

People worry mainly about their children, job security, relationships and health but there are other, smaller worries that manifest into our minds. Distant events such as wars and famines in other countries, air disasters, crime and random acts of violence, even volatility in the stock market. So how can you control your worry, and decrease your anxiety levels so that it doesn’t reach toxic proportions which can become harmful to your health? Here are some things you can do:

  • Get the facts. Often worry is based on a lack of information or misinformation.
  • Take action. Set up an emergency cash reserve if you worry over finances. Talk to your boss about problems at work. See your doctor if you have medical concerns that have been worrying you.
  • Never worry alone. Talk to someone about your anxieties. Men and women will worry about the same things but men will bottle up their worries.
  • Have quiet moments. Go for a walk in a quiet place. Being outdoors, having a change of scenery and fresh air can change your perspective. Listen to music that is calm and soothing, take up meditation or try a warm bath with some aromatherapy.
  • Most Importantly…Get exercise. Exercising at least 3 times a week is not only good for your physical state – when you exercise, your mental state changes, reducing anxiety and depression.

<b>How to avoid overtraining for runners.</b>

The hard/easy rule of training will take you a long way towards avoiding overtraining. It involves taking a rest or easy day after every hard workout in order to allow you body to regenerate. The easy day following your hard day of training is absolutely essential for the regeneration of your body: your muscles, bones and blood cells and connective tissue immediately begin to heal themselves following your hard run. Some people may even need two easy days between hard workouts in order to complete this process of regeneration.

<b>What is hard and what is easy?</b>

Your hard and easy days are relative to your level of fitness. As a beginner, run only every other day taking a complete rest day in between. As you improve you’ve reached the intermediate and advanced levels, you may be running every days. On your hard day you might add some extra time to your base run or maybe incorporate some interval training (running at 80% of you maximum heart rate for no more than 3 minutes follows by a recovery jog). For your easy day you might a familiar loop at a conventional pace. As you get fitter you hard days should become harder and your easy days become easier.

<b>The friction coefficient and recovery.</b>

Some runners are lighter on their feet than others which is due to their varying friction coefficients. Knowing yours won’t help you recover more quickly than before, it simply explains why you need more easy days than your running partner. Simply put, this is energy used to propel the body forwards, relative to what is lost and pushed downwards into the ground. It’s not just down to body weight either. Even light weight runners can have a heavy foot strike. ‘Landing hard’ produces more micro tears in your leg muscle fibres than being light footed, and therefore the body requires extra time to recover and regenerate.
