The Five Core Ethics Of The Martial Arts

Many martial arts schools around the world promote a philosophy of self-improvement as well as an expected standard of technical skill. When you think about it, it is the philosophy rather than the technical skill that should influence every practitioner’s daily life.

The martial arts philosophy, or at least the traditional karate philosophy, is called the Dojo-Kun. The Dojo-Kun is simply a five point ethical guide for training in the martial arts and for behavior in your everyday life and is sometimes called the “Student Creed” in English. The traditional karate ethics are often translated as:

· To strive for the perfection of character
· To follow the paths of truth
· To foster a spirit of effort
· To honor the principles of etiquette
· To guard against impetuous courage

In many traditional karate schools these precepts are chanted at the beginning and end of each lesson in Japanese, and in other schools in English. In some schools there is no chanting at all, just a posting of the principles on the dojo wall and other schools invent their own “Student Creed.”

I’m not here to tell you which way is right or wrong, but what you should do when choosing a martial arts school is ask yourself whether the core values of that school resonate with your view of life and your moral ethics. After all you are exposing yourself and your family to a very emotive venture by beginning your karate journey. A conflict of moral values is likely to “Dim Mak” (deliver a Death Touch to) your involvement in the martial arts from the very beginning.

The Dojo-Kun’s precepts can offer a very simple template for following a virtuous path and for reaching your potential in everything you do and for being a good citizen. It’s up to you to decide how this philosophy fits in with your own ideals and ethics.

Most people find these five core ethics to be something that they can relate to on an intimate basis; some people don’t place much value on the philosophy of the martial arts and are in your karate class alongside you for very different reasons such as self-defense or basic health and fitness.

The phrase “each unto his own” is definitely applicable here. As with so many things in life, we have to find our own way given our own set of criteria and backgrounds.

Essentially there are many other paths to self-realization and understanding of the greater world around you. The martial arts simply offer a valuable template for beginning to understand yourself and others through understanding movement, power, speed, timing, energy, tension, relaxation and harmony. It is a beginning in what can be a long and extremely rewarding journey.

Many Americans are obsessed with their health, but the United States remains a country of the obese. Obesity in the U.S. has taken the form of an epidemic, even though more information and more resources are available to us today than at any time in history. Why is this the case?

There are fitness facilities designed to meet the needs of people of all types and ages. Fitness centers exist for older individuals, young people, males, and females. There are fitness centers that are open 24-hours every day, facilities that provide day care and programs tailored to individual needs. It would appear that Americans would not have problems controlling their weight or improving their overall physical fitness with this wide array of choices.

Many fitness facilities even offer their new clients the chance to obtain an initial physical assessment, personalized training, and continuing consultations free with membership. Mothers with small children can take advantage of fitness centers that provide in-house day care facilities. If an individual feels uncomfortable exercising together with members of the opposite sex, fitness centers offer programs and classes for men only or women only.

Individual medical bills will decrease, as will over-the-counter health needs, because exercise makes a body more capable or warding off germs.

Gyms and fitness centers nationwide are open every day to help people obtain better health and physical fitness. It is the responsibility of each person to take advantage of what they have to offer.

There is a sport activity or pastime for everyone

There is a sport, activity or pastime for everyone.

My sixteen year old daughter is a very, focused young lady, no slouch academically she expects good grades and she works hard to get them. She enjoys the outdoors, music and has a sense of humour that makes her popular with her peers. She has a career path set out ahead of her which involves getting placed at a good university. Those are her plans, obviously as parents we encourage her, but she knows what is expected in order to achieve her goals and structures her life accordingly.

With the competition for university places at such an extremely fierce level young people have to prepare themselves at an early age, it is not only enough to achieve academically, they also have to develop an all round package in order to stand out from the crowd. We are very fortunate in the respect that some of the things that stand youngsters in good stead our daughter enjoys, she has been learning to play the guitar, having given up on the flute at an early age, she attends a youth group who help in the community and go on outdoor expeditions, hiking and camping overnight, unfortunately they are not as frequent as she would like due to school commitments. The only thing that she was lacking, if anything, from the desired Curriculum Vitae was a physical sport, something to keep her fit on a regular basis and attain physical achievement.

Now when I was at school, some however many years ago, you tended to be grouped into two types, good at sport and not so good at sport, well, I don’t think much has changed and I suspected from a couple of parent evening chats that my daughter was firmly in the second group. So we started to suggest to her various sports and activities to have a go at, she wanted to do something which would give her fitness but was not the mainstream sports taught at school, this was a dilemma, so I started to research this and it was not easy.

My research and various suggestions eventually led to Kayaking, so now that we had decided on kayaking we needed to find a place to go, not living by a river or lake with a kayak club located down the road some more research was again needed, eventually we found a club and as a matter of coincidence one of the instructors we knew. My daughter and a friend set off for a practice session at a nearby canal and she took to it like a duck to water, if you will excuse the pun. So having found a sport she can do and enjoy, it demonstrates that she was only in the second school group because like so many others she had just not found the right activity for her, thus the end of the story, or maybe not.

All this research got me thinking, why was there no popular site out there with all types of sports and activities, come to think of it, a site featuring any type of activity or pastime, a site that also provides a list of local clubs, with not just a link but a bit of information about them, so that is how I started, I have had some help on the way and it has been a huge learning curve, but I have built it:

The site of course will never be finished but I am compiling information all the time and any club can list, so if you are involved with a club please visit it and list it. If you are looking to try something new then visit, you never know how something can enhance you if you never try it.
