Exercise: importance of warming up before exercise

Exercise: Importance of Warming Up Before Exercise

Since a lot of people are involved in physical exercises, it is imperative that the importance of warming up before any strenuous activity should be discussed. Many have repeatedly ignored going through the warm up stage before working out, not knowing the consequences in doing so.

Why warm up? Several changes takes place in the body once physical activity is initiated. A person’s respiratory rate, blood flow, and oxygen and nutrient levels delivered to the cells increases. The rate of increase should be regulated in a steady pace to prepare the body for the physical stress that exercise will demand. If one foregoes this priming procedure, the body will function less efficiently and the workout will produce less quality results. Warming up preps up the nervous system, heightens mental awareness and alertness, and loosens up joints and muscles to make them less prone to injuries. Warm ups jump starts the fluid located in the joints, minimizing the risk for wear and tear of the muscles. It gives the heart a suitable period to adjust and pump up blood and nutrients into muscles.

This is vital for older people, since they have tissues that are less supple; they have joints with less fluid, and weaker hearts. Sudden exercise can produce heart attacks to older people.

How does a person warm up properly? Initially, it can be done in any procedure that enables the heart to beat faster. One can simply walk and jog, or if a cardiovascular equipment is available, such as rowing machine or a bicycle, it can be utilized. Start at a gentle pace, and then slowly increase the pace until heart beat rate increases and the body temperature rises. It important to note that the pace should be in accordance to one’s current fitness level, where the activity will leave the person energized and not exhausted.

After working up a light sweat (suggested time is 3-5 minutes, longer if the person is working out in a cold environment) one should do dynamic stretching. Stretching helps in developing overall flexibility, particularly in the spine, shoulder, and hip areas. The kind of stretching depends on the type of activity a person plans to engage to. For instance, if one is about to play sports, the recommended kind of stretching would be the ones that mimics the movements that will be done in the court or field. If one is about to do martial arts, light sparring can be done in the quarter of the normal speed, or just simply do the movements in slow motion. Be certain that the major muscles groups are stretched for 8 seconds minimum. It is necessary to remember to keep feet moving or do leg exercises whenever the upper body is stretched to keep prevent blood from pooling in the legs. Remember, one should only do stretching if the muscles are already warmed up. Do not bounce while stretching. It leads to a contraction that can result in muscle tear or pull.

For weight-lifters, this is what should be done after the initial warm up. Load the bar with about 50-60% of the heaviest weight to be done for the session and perform the number of repetitions that will be done for the heavy sets. For the second set, the weight will be increased to 80%, then eventually to 90%, decreasing to 2-3 repetitions. Afterwards, rest for about 30 seconds, then repeat the steps. After this warm up, one can now proceed to the heavy lifting for the day. The advantage of doing the procedure is that the heavy sets will feel less daunting and can now be performed with considerably less stress.

After warming up and proceeding to the main workout, it is equally important to cool down. When a person suddenly stops exercising or lifting weights, blood gathers in the muscle and oxygen is blocked. When this happens, a person runs the risk of having a heart attack. So cooling down should have the same importance as warming up.

Exercise is good for the health. Everyone is encouraged to pump it up, just remember to remember all the necessary precautions not only to maximize the workout, but also to stay safe and healthy.

The ultimate,fat burning, outdoor workout

The ultimate,fat burning, outdoor workout

Spring is the right season to move our workouts outdoors.

Exercising outdoors offers besides the undisputable benefits – of which the importance we have repeatedly stressed – some additional, very important indeed:

– valuable fresh air

– serenity, relaxation and rest for the eyes and the mind

– the beneficial influence of the sun on our moods

– triggering of precious vitamin D production. Lack of adequate vitamin D can negatively impact us in many ways.

– avoidance of crowded gyms. Ample room to move freely.

This is a workout I like to perform in the hilly, Thessaloniki surrounding forest of Sheikh Sou (the forest of Sheikh).

WARM UP (5 MINUTES)

Spend 5 minutes to warm up your muscles and joints, elevate your temperature and gradually raise your heart rate.

Warming up is crucial to prepare the body for a strenuous workout.

You can do some jogging, brisk walking, jumping jacks, walking lunges, rope jumping etc.

Raise your heart rate to about 140 bpm.

STRENGTH TRAINING (10 MINUTES)

Here you will need some weights. Since it is mostly impracticable to carry your dumbbells – or whatever else – with you, you will have to use something else: By far your best choice is to use your own body’s weight.

Yes, you can perform a nice and vastly effective total body workout.

I consider this cruel, functional, versatile workout as the best investment for my limited time. It helps me preserve my muscle mass while in synergy with other exercises it allows for the control or even reduction of my body fat percentage.

Actually it’s a circuit of compound, multijoint exercises that involves all important muscle groups.

You will execute three types of exercises:

LOWER BODY EXERCISES

Emphasis is given on squats and lunges. There are practically limitless versions.

CORE (BACK + ABS) EXERCISES

You will perform exercises as:

* spiderman lunges

* mountain climbers (many variations) and especially mountain climber twists

* from a push up position: touch your right foot with your left palm in a coordinated movement. Go on.

In this workout you should avoid static exercises: planks etc.

UPPER BODY EXERCISES

– Push ups (endless variations)

– Bear crawling etc.

Alternate these exercises with minimal breaks to have a tough and very demanding total body workout.

Your heart rate will be almost permanently over 140 bpm and it may reach 160 bpm. This is a very exhausting workout which combines aerobic with anaerobic training.

H.I.I.T.: 60m sprints (about 13-14 min.).

Sprinting is a very powerful form of exercise. Great for the body, great for the spirit!! It combines harmony, coordination, power and will.

Nothing else – I speak for sports – can leave me more ecstatic and with a magic feeling of fulfillment!

Sprinting is unbeatable if you want to keep a lean, muscular physique. Either you need to lose fat or you want to gain muscle – and why not both? – sprinting is for you one of the best choices.

Sprinting will increase both your aerobic and anaerobic cardiovascular fitness.

Need more?

HOW TO DO SPRINTS?

Count a distance of about 60m. The path should be slightly uphill. After your body workout you are warm and ready to jump to sprints. Wait until your pulse falls to about 120 bpm.

Run at full speed the 60m distance. Your time for the first 2-3 sprints should be in the region of 12-14 sec.

Your pulse after the first sprint will rise to about 160 bpm.

Come back to the starting point by walking in a relaxed way (Don’t jog. You have to recover!).

This is the slow, resting part of your H.I.I.T. The time break between two sprints should be somewhere between 90-120 sec.

Repeat this ritual for a total of 8 sprints.

Your last 6 sprints should last less than 12 sec, if you want to reap the maximum benefits.

Sprinting will keep your metabolism raised for 1-2 days. This is a most welcome side benefit.

But the best with sprinting is that is a very effective natural way to increase your human growth hormone levels. This has positive influences on many facets of your fitness profile.

COOLING DOWN

After sprinting, decrease gradually your intensity until your heart rate falls to 100 – 110 bpm.

Permit lactic acid and other waste products to be removed.

Do some static stretching and you are finished. It was a really great workout.

– Do this workout 2 times/per week.

– Adopt an active lifestyle and a sound nutritional plan and leave the life you deserve!

The three main categories of water sports explored

The Three Main Categories of Water Sports Explored

Water sports have always been among man’s favorite and most challenging sports. Whether it is on the water, in the water or under the water, water sports have always fascinated the adventurer and sports lover. What is it that distinguishes these types of sports from other sports? What are their advantages? In addition, what are the different kinds of water sports? Read on as we tell you more…

Advantages of Water Sports:

Why are they so special? “The sheer fun of being in water,” says 28-year-old Natalie, a water sports lover. According to her, some of the major benefits include:

*They set the stage for excellent fitness exercises that stretch your muscles and build strength in unique ways.
*Unlike other sports, you aren’t sweating as you do them, so even though you’re working hard, your body temp stays cool.
*Since they are so different from other sports, competing in the water, an element we were not built for is a fantastic challenge.
*Especially for those sports, which require holding one’s breath, the athlete must develop larger lungs, capable of holding more air, thus staying beneath the surface for a longer period of time. The natural benefit of larger lungs and the ability to breath in more air is a healthier body. Like water, the more oxygen we can get into our bodies, the more efficiently our bodies work.

There are a large number of sports that involve water. They can be classified into these categories: In the water, under the water, and on the water.

In the Water:

The most popular is, of course, swimming. The human race mastered this skill long ago. Swimming forms an interesting component of several other major sports or activities that include:

*The Triathlon: This is a combination of swimming, cycling, and running.
*Modern Pentathlon: It includes epee fencing, pistol shooting, swimming, show-horse jumping, and cross country running.
*Rescue Swimming: Swimming with a mission to rescue other swimmers. As a water sport, it helps develop a variety of key attributes. Strength, Leadership, and staying calm in high-pressure situations are necessary abilities, which are also great life skills to possess.
*Snorkeling is a very popular water activity. It is the practice of swimming on the surface of the water equipped with a mask and short tube known as a snorkel.

There are several group sports that are played in water. These include:

*Water Basketball: A team, ball, basket, water. It’s very similar to basketball in water.
*Water Polo: A physical team sport that requires strength for hard throwing, endurance, and extremely fast reflexes for defense.
*Synchronized Swimming: A hybrid of swimming, gymnastics, and ballet. Endurance, Awareness, and Flexibility are the hallmarks of this sport.
*Surf Lifesaving is a competitive sport that evolved from the training activities of lifeguards at surf beaches.

Underwater Sports:

These include various forms of diving. Among the most popular underwater sports are:

*Scuba Diving is an adventure unto itself. Each person is required to take professional lessons to learn it after which the person becomes a Certified Diver. With mask, wet suit (body suit) fins for the feet, and a Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA)- you’re ready to enter a world you never knew existed beneath the surface.
*Free Diving: The aim of the diver is to dive in and swim down to the maximum depth without a breathing apparatus. Necessary tools are great lungs, and the ability to equalize the water pressure, which builds on the ears as one travels deeper.

Underwater group sports include:

*Underwater Rugby that is played with a ball that is naturally buoyant. Here breathing is done through a snorkel and tackling is only allowed if you have the ball or are tackling the one holding it.
*Underwater Hockey is played under water with short wooden curved sticks and a heavy puck. In this game, players wear diving masks, snorkels, and fins and must surface to breathe while teammates continue the game on the pool bottom.

Water sports that take place ON the surface are a special breed. They’re usually extremely fast-past, requiring the participant to be fully aware at all times, and can be some of the more dangerous sports.

Surface Sports Include:

*Boating: Races are held every year in different parts of the world. Like car racing, the boats are sometimes made from extremely light, fragile material and the danger level rises with the speeds.
*Canoe polo: Playing polo using a canoe
*Body boarding: This sport is similar to surfing. However, the board is smaller and the person lies on the board.
*Surface Skimming: These types of sports include traditional surfing, water skiing, kneeboarding, and wake boarding. They require great footwork, and excellent balance.

There are excellent water sports associations that offer training, organized expeditions, and adventure sports in thrilling destinations all over the world. The Internet, as always, has the most up-to-date information on how you can get involved. Keep checking regularly, and in the meantime pick your favorite sport and dive in!

Summary:

There are a large number of sports that involve water. They can be classified into these categories: In the water, under the water, and on the water.

The festive taper: how to train and enjoy the holiday season

The Festive Taper: How To Train And Enjoy The Holiday Season

During the Festive Taper we are essentially doing the same as when tapering to race, just this time instead of reducing the aerobic load to allow the body to recover and energy levels to build pre-race while maintaining fitness, we are freeing up more time to spend with family and friends. Here are some tips to take forward into this month.
MAINTENANCE
Our body is an amazing machine and its ability to maintain fitness gains with very minimal training is something we want to use to our advantage this month. When looking to maintain fitness we want to look at the areas of fitness that take the longest to build up because that is where we want to focus our efforts. Speed and strength are the two areas of fitness that take the most time to develop while endurance takes the least amount of time. So let’s concentrate on maintaining the speed and strength gains we have made and take the endurance that comes with it as a bonus, knowing that we can get our endurance back very quickly in the New Year when everything settles down again.
Speed and strength maintenance
As mentioned above, speed and strength take a long time to build up. Following our training methods we are constantly looking for small but continuous gains. As we always say at ironguides: build slowly but constantly – brick by brick. So how do we maintain this developed speed and strength without completing our full sessions and taking a step back in our development?
•    reduce interval length
•    reduce interval number
•    maintain interval effort
This is very similar to what you would typically do during a taper. The aim here is to maintain the motor patterns built up in our muscles but in this instance we are not doing this to reduce the aerobic load on the body as in a taper but due to lack of time. The end result is the same; we maintain fitness and freshen up. That’s a double result for family and friends as we have more time for them and we are not constantly fatigued.
EXAMPLE
Let’s say you arrive home planning your usual track interval session. This session would normally take 90 minutes in total, door to door, but when you get home you find out plans have been made that you can’t get out of. Say you’re now faced with 30 minutes of possible training time, instead of your normal 90. Don’t dismiss the session thinking 30 minutes is not long enough, get moody and spend the evening thinking about your lost session and not enjoying yourself. Use the time you have available. Let’s look at what to do.
PLANNED SESSION
20min easy/strides  – 10x3min HARD +2min / 20min cooldown
So you can’t do the session above but you can make sure that in the 30 minutes available you work the muscles at the effort and speed you would have completed in the normal session. The end result may not be building fitness but you will have maintained your fitness and be in a better position next week for your full session. The 30-minute session to maintain fitness would look something like this:
30-MINUTE SESSION ALTERNATIVE
5min easy/ 5min building to moderate effort  – 5x2min HARD +1min – 5min easy
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
By keeping calm and knowing how to maintain fitness levels with a reduced training load you can enjoy the festive season without the constant threat of holiday events interrupting your training. You will find that the extra energy and happiness you have from this will be noticed by family and friends and they will appreciate the extra time and energy you can give them this holiday season!
Enjoy your training and all the best for the festive season from everyone at ironguides.
