Many aspiring martial arts students underestimate the number of styles that exist. Most people tend to think of karate, kung fu, and to a lesser extent, hapkido and Taekwondo. How To Practice Being Successful

You might think that some people are just naturally successful and others are not. Perhaps that is true but I have discovered that achieving success is a skill. It cuts across most areas of human activity including health and fitness, gambling and investments.

I already have a black-belt in karate but I am now training in a mixed-martial arts style and my instructor wants me to attempt my black-belt grading in this style in about 2 months from now. I received a syllabus of what I must be able to do for the grading. At about line 2 or 3 it reads ‘100 push ups’ then ‘100 sit ups’ and there are 2-3 pages of specific skills required. Three weeks ago I would have been lucky to do 10 pushups. So I thought to myself, “how can I set myself up for success to do 100 pushups?” I’m 44 years old so it’s not as easy as when I was in my 20’s.

I have completed a fitness leaders course so I had a good idea where to start. The first thing I decided to do was to practice achieving the goal of 100 machine ‘bench presses’ using a very light weight. Not 99. Not 101. Exactly 100. I wanted to practice succeeding at the goal, not practice trying to get to 100 repetitions and failing. On my first attempt I could not complete 100 rep’s but after a week of training I could accomplish the task on the lightest weight.

After I could do 100, my emotional response was to do more until I failed. Wait – what was that? I am successful at my goal, now train until I fail? Is this not reinforcing a pattern in life to work at something until it fails?

I had to think carefully – “how can I still achieve my goal of 100 push-ups and increase the intensity?” I chose to do about a third on the next level up, then do two thirds on the lowest level. I am training my mind to make the distance every time.

What about gambling? I don’t gamble with poker machines or in casinos but I do trade on the stock market and on an online multiplayer adventure game. I consider trading as a form of gambling. This is why I train myself to stop when I reach my goal. It is very tempting when I gamble to continue to trade “until I fail”. I know it is an emotional response to want to continue. If my goal is to make $1k in a day, or a week – it doesn’t matter. It takes discipline to stop when I hit the goal and not keep trading until I fail. It also means to stop-loss my position if I’m on a losing stock and not try and ‘trade-my-way-out’.

What about a diet? I find that if I set a goal to lose 1-2 pounds of body fat a week that this is an achievable goal but if I’m on track, isn’t there a temptation to try and do more? Of course a smarter goal would be to replace a pound of body fat with a pound of lean muscle, in which case the scales are fairly useless anyway.

What about earning extra income? If I spend 40 hours a week at work and I discover that I can work an extra 10% after tax by doing another 4 hours a week, isn’t there a temptation to extend the goal a bit and maybe work an extra 8 hours? In the short run this might work but it’s not a long-term pattern for success. It would set me up to fail as a father and husband as it eats into time meant to be for other areas of my life.

When setting a goal to pass a grading, complete an education, get a business venture off the ground, move into a new house or some other big goal, it requires you to put most of your resources and focus into that goal to achieve it. Once you hit your goal, relax just a little and think about your big picture before raising the bar and going for an even bigger, more audacious goal. Enjoy the moment of success.

I run therefore I am fit and I do not need resistance training. Not so quick. You are fitter than if you did not run, but not paying attention to your entire metabolic need for resistance training is short sighted. All your muscles need to be worked or you will find yourself out of balance.

I am getting bored at the gym. Include variety in your workouts or you risk becoming bored and will eventually avoid the gym altogether. There are hundreds of different exercises to perform. Observe, ask questions, and get creative.

The gym takes too long to get through my workout. Stop resting between sets unless you are an Olympic athlete. Resting between sets wastes time and prevents you from reaching your target heart rate. Power lifters rest between sets. You are not a power lifter, at least I hope not.

I do not belong to a gym. No problem. You do not need a gym. Use your body weight as resistance and be as creative as you can with pushing and pulling your own weight. Knee pushups are better than no pushups at all. Push against a chair or counter.

Wrap a towel around a door knob and pull your torso back and forth towards the door. Do straight back knee bends with no weight on your shoulders and your legs will begin to burn after 30 or 40 reps, so do 80.

I do not have time to work out. Yes, you do have time. If you watch any inkling of TV, then you have chosen to escape life and not work out. Engage in sit-ups and pushups while watching TV.

I live in an apartment complex and cannot get to a gym. Good. Run your apartment stairs in thick wool socks. The socks protect your feet and eliminate noise from the soles of your shoes. And, workout in your apartment pool, recreation center, or apartment playground.

All I have is a swimming pool. Excellent, perform resistance work in your pool. Stand vertical and push and pull the water. You hands are not over your head and you shoulders will benefit from proper positioning. You can also run water sprints and perform abdominal crunches in the pool. Get creative.

It is time we set our excuses aside and get creative when we workout. Maybe even replace the word workout with body movement. Body movement is really what we are after, and our body will reward us when we put it into action.

The Australian summer tennis series is upon us once again. For most players the Australian Open is one of the toughest tournaments of the year due to several factors.

First of all many players use the last month of the year to take a break from the tour and their hectic travel schedules. As a result many players struggle physically to cope after this extensive layoff. To add to the drama most players are coming out of the cold winter conditions of Europe and the USA and straight into extremely hot weather conditions of the Aussie Open.

The Australian Open is notorious for players having to forfeit matches due to heat exhaustion. As a result there is a great opportunity for those players who may be inferior when it comes to talent but possess superior fitness levels.

The Australian open has undergone some major changes but none more so that the new surface that has been laid down. The green colour of the rebound ace courts have been replaced by the blue Plexi-cushion surface. Only time will tell as to the playability of the new surface. So far in the lead up tournaments in the Hopman Cup and also in Adelaide the feedback has been positive from the players.

From the men’s draw the favourite is of course Roger Federer who has proven to be a class above the other players especially in the Grand Slam tournaments. He should follow up again with another win after his emotional victory last year.

A record number of tennis fans will once again flock to Melbourne Park to brave the extremely hot weather conditions. Tennis Australia has already stated that they will not tolerate any of the fan misbehaviour as was seen last year. There were violent clashes between various groups last year including the Serbians and Croatians. There will be a strong police presence throughout the tennis complex to prevent this from happening again.

When it comes to tickets the night sessions are still very popular and always showcase the top players in action. The best ticket during the grand slam is the “Grounds Pass” for the first week where you can get courtside and watch some of the great matches on the outside courts. It is during the second week that most of the outside matches consist of the juniors, mixed doubles and veterans’ matches.

Roger Federer’s chance of winning all four grand slam tennis titles starts here in Australia. His preparation was suppose to start at the Kooyong Classic but he was a late withdrawal due to illness. Federer would have had some valuable match play against his fellow top players such as Andy Roddick, Fernando Gonzalez, David Nalbandian, Tommy Haas, Andy Murray, Ivan Ljubicic and the crowd favourite Marat Safin. The Kooyong Classic will be the first opportunity for many of the players to test out the new surface of Plexi-cushion which has replaced the controversial rebound ace.

The Australian Open always produces some great matches and we look forward to another great tournament this year. Of course it is Federer’s tournament to win but there will be some players trying to knock him off. Some of the players to watch out for include Roddick, Murray, Hewitt and Gonazalez.

On the women’s side Justine Henin is coming off another top year but will definitely face some tough competition from the William’s sisters, Maria Sharapova and the veteran Lindsay Davenport. With hot conditions predicted it will be interesting to see if Sharapova experiences the same heat exhaustion that she succumbed to last year. Davenports’ experience will get her through to the later stages of the tournament but fitness may be questioned when it comes to being able to win seven matches in a row.

Overall the Australian Open brings in record crowds and provides for some great entertainment not only to the die hard tennis fans but also those who enjoy the social experiences that are found at the open. Live music, great food and plenty of entertainment always attracts a diverse group of spectators.
